Animal-Assisted Therapy Sessions

We offer the option to add a therapy dog to your occupational therapy in-clinic session. Our certified therapy dogs, Amigo and Luciana, can bring a calming, grounding, and engaging presence to each session.

A therapy dog can be especially beneficial to kids with autism, anxiety, and trauma. They allow children to experience high levels of success and autonomy in leading interactions — without the expectation of language.

Sessions with your therapy dog will look different based on your child’s needs. Sometimes they may be in the room for the whole session, sometimes they are actively engaged in the games, and other times they may simply offer a calming presence.

Funding Options

NDIS, Mental Health Care Plans & Healthcare Funds

We offer a range of funding options. Many of our clients have NDIS funding (we accept self-managed or plan-managed funding only). If you do not have an NDIS plan, you may be able to get a GP referral to help cover the cost of therapy through a Mental Health Care Plan which can attract a Medicare rebate for up to 5-10 sessions per year. We also accept GP Medicare Plans (often known as Team Care Arrangements), as long as your plan has at least three sessions nominated to one of our therapists. You may also be entitled to rebates on your Health Fund. All of our fees are in line with the current NDIS pricing guide. We welcome all enquiries about pricing.

Please note: We no longer accept Chronic Disease Management Plans.

Learn More Animal-Assisted Therapy

Animal-assisted therapy involves incorporating animals (usually dogs, cats, or horses) into the session and activities, alongside your regular therapist. The presence of an animal can have a positive impact on sensory behaviours, social-communication, participation, and more.

Most of our clients love working with our therapy dogs. They can make a real difference for kids that struggle with anxiety, emotional regulation, staying engaged in the session, or communication challenges. However, this approach isn’t right for everyone — especially if you or your child is not a fan of dogs, afraid of them, or allergic to them.

At the moment, we have two beautiful Australian Sheep Dogs, Amigo and Luciana. Our therapy dogs are well-trained, calming (but playful), and quiet, and they have very soft, pattable fur!

We’re based in North Brisbane. We can offer animal-assisted therapy for occupational therapy appointments at one of our two clinics (Kallangur for ages 0-9; Burpengary for ages 0-17).

Like our other therapists, sessions with therapy dogs must be scheduled in advance and are typically on a regular basis (weekly or fortnightly) at either our Kallangur or Burpengary clinics. Occasionally, our therapy dogs may not be available to come to a regular session due to needing some extra downtime (they work hard and play hard!).

Animal-assisted therapy is charged as an add-on to your existing occupational therapy session (to cover any associated extra expenses). When you enquire about therapy, we’ll provide a quote so you know exactly what to expect.
